Medicina tradicional Shipibo, pasado, presente y futuro: un encuentro intercultural

Heredera de una larga y rica tradición médica, Laura, –maestra, madre, hija y hermana– es un eslabón en una larga cadena de transmisión ininterrumpida que conforma el conjunto de las prácticas y los conocimientos ancestrales del pueblo Shipibo. En esta presentación, Laura hará un recorrido por el pasado de su práctica médica, contextualizando su vocación actual como curandera a través de una mirada histórica al trabajo de sus antepasados. A través de una narrativa inter-generacional, Laura expondrá las diversas maneras en que el trabajo de sus ancestros informa la manera en que ella y sus hermanos trabajan en la actualidad, además de identificar importantes cambios en los usos y aplicaciones modernos del sistema medico Shipibo. Laura ofrecerá una perspectiva personal sobre el valor que tiene la ayahuasca en particular y la medicina tradicional en general para el mundo actual, además de intentar aclarar algunas confusiones respecto a sus usos, centrándose especialmente entre la diferencia entre el concepto de “medicina” y el concepto de “droga”. Laura hablara sobre el encuentro entre occidente y las prácticas médicas y espirituales indígenas, y tocara temas relacionados a las formas y maneras en que diferentes extranjeros están utilizando –y algunas veces administrando—medicinas vegetales, resaltando la importancia de trabajar con personas experimentadas que realmente saben manejarlas adecuadamente.

Heiress to a long and rich medical tradition, Laura –teacher, mother, daughter and sister–, is part of the long chain of uninterrupted transmission that conforms the body of practices and ancestral knowledge of the Shipibo people. In this presentation, Laura will revisit the past of her medical practice, contextualizing her current vocation as a modern-day healer through a historical gaze at the work of her ancestors. Through an intergenerational narrative, Laura will present the diverse ways in which the work of her ancestors informs the way in which she and her siblings are working today, including the identification of important changes in the modern uses and applications of the Shipibo medical system. Laura will offer her personal perspective regarding the value that ayahuasca has for the modern world, and she will try to clarify some confusion regarding the differences between the concepts of «medicine» and «drug». In this talk, we will discuss the fascinating encounter between Western culture and the indigenous medical and spiritual practices, and we will touch upon issues related to the ways and means in which different foreigners are using (and sometimes administering) plant medicines, emphasizing the importance of working with experienced people who know how to use them properly and respectfully.
