Biografía

Maria Mercedes Agreda Chicunque es miembro de la comunidad indígena Kamentsa Biya. ‘Kamentsa Biya’ significa ‘hombres de aquí mismo con pensamiento y lengua propia’, su territorio esta en el Putumayo, sur de Colombia. Mercedes es practicante de la tradición yagecera. Desde la infancia comenzó a aprender de su abuelo, Taita Martin Agreda, quien la llevaba a recolectar plantas para la curación. Hace un año suspendió sus estudios de enfermería para estudiar con su padre Taita Juan Agreda Bautista Chindoy, considerando ésta una decisión valiosa para su comunidad al ayudarlos a preservar su medicina ancestral, rescatar su identidad y proteger su ‘Batsamama’ – Madre Tierra. “Mis antepasados ​​no tenían necesidad de experimentos científicos porque simplemente tenían el gran poder y la sabiduría para sanar con las plantas y sus rituales. Nuestras plantas ancestrales han sido estudiadas, sometidas a pruebas, experimentadas en laboratorios y procesadas. Estos estudios han demostrado lo que ya sabemos: que entre nuestras plantas ancestrales hay valiosas propiedades curativas. Mi mensaje para ustedes es que espero que valoren el poder de nuestras plantas ancestrales y mágicas que nuestra madre tierra nos ofrece para sanar”.

Maria Mercedes Agreda Chicunque is a 22 years old member of the Kamentsa Biya indigenous community. ‘Kamentsa Biya’ translates to ‘men of this place with their own thought and language’; their territory is in the Putumayo of southern Colombia. Mercedes is a practitioner of the yagé tradition. Since early childhood, she began to learn from her grandfather, Taita Martin Agreda, who took her on walks to gather plants he used for healing. A year ago, she discontinued nursing school and today, she studies full time with her father Taita Juan Agreda Bautista Chindoy. In doing so, she believes she can be of more value to her community by helping them to preserve their ancestral medicine, rescue their identity and protect their ‘Batsamama’ – Mother Earth. “My ancestors had no need for scientific experiments because they simply had the great power and wisdom to heal with plants and their rituals. Our ancestral plants have been studied, and put through laboratory experiments. These studies demonstrate what we already know, that there are valuable healing properties in our ancestral plants. My hope is that you will value the power of the ancestral and magical plants that our Mother Earth offers us for healing”.
